Eagle & Plow

THE EAGLE & PLOW STORY

Patriotism and service are important threads in the Mercer family fabric. Throughout history, Mercers have risen to serve and defend our country. We honor and revere everyone who does the same, from police officers an firefighters to soldiers and sailors.

The idea for our Eagle & Plow label came after that tragic September day in 2001. On this day, our country lost its sense of security, and many Americans lost much more. Our Vineyard Manager John Derrick was among those grieving the loss of a loved one. His best friend, Richard Guadagno, was on board Flight 93 when it went down in a Pennsylvania field.

Our leader Rob Mercer served as a captain in the US Marine Corps in the 1990’s.  After the attacks on 9-11, he reenlisted to serve our country in Iraq, losing many precious days with his young family.

When Rob returned from service, he and John decided to plant a special vineyard (BLOCK 93), in the most ideal location on the Mercer family farm.  Not only would it serve as a memorial for fallen heroes, but as a means to give back to programs benefiting those who have served and suffered. The fruit from these vines is used, exclusively, to produce our Eagle & Plow, BLOCK 93 Cabernet Sauvignon.  100% of the revenues generated by this wine are donated to charities that serve American servicemen and women, their families, and the survivors of tragic events.

Since the inaugural 2012 vintage of Eagle & Plow, BLOCK 93 Cabernet Sauvignon, we have raised a heartwarming $100,000 for American servicemen/ women, and their families. Our fundraising efforts have gone to support organizations such as Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, Camp Patriot, Friends of Flight 93, New England Center for Homeless Veterans, See4Vets, Semper Fi Fund, K9 United, Operation New Uniform and the Wounded Warrior Project.

ABOUT THE WINE

Eagle & Plow Cabernet Sauvignon, BLOCK 93

This very special block of vines has slowly begun to mature, and the resulting wine is evidence of that. Intoxicating aromas of black currant and blueberry, savory dried herbs and sweet roasted caramel combine with hints of tea tree and eucalyptus.  On the palate, the wine is mouth coating with rich, dense powdery tannins.  A background of dark roasted espresso brings warmth the wine.  This wine is balanced and elegant with a powerful grace that will ensure its aging potential for many years.

The fruit was harvested on October 9th, 2015.  2015 was the fourth harvest for this block and yielded 3.25 tons of fruit. These grapes were double sorted, first in the vineyard with the selective harvest on our Pellenc harvesters, then again at the winery on our sorting table.  The fruit was not crushed in order to preserve as much whole-berry as possible.  We fermented the wine in our oak upright tank with twice daily punch downs.   After fermentation, the wine was racked to four new French oak and four older French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation.  The wine was aged in those eight barrels for 18 months before being blended together.
